Maruch Méndez, a Maya/Tsotsil artist, was born in K’atixtik, San Juan Chamula, Chiapas, Mexico, in 1957. She is a self-taught artist specializing in terracotta, using the traditional clay of Chamula. She fires her pieces in an open hearth at her home. Méndez, a monolingual Tsotsil speaker, is a j’ilol (prayer healer), a visionary curandera with high religious roles in her hometown.

Recognized for her performances involving ritual and prayer, Méndez has presented her artistic work in Mexico, California, Texas, and Paris. See more.
