Art Today: Of the Maya and Zoque of Chiapas

This publication is an image-ful glance at the exciting contemporary art made by Maya and Zoque painters, photographers, sculptors and performance and new media artists from the southern state Chiapas, Mexico. Emerging and mid-career creators mix and match a range of strategies, rescuing Classic Maya imagery, reconfiguring traditional backstrap weaving motifs, freely appropriating the colonial heritage and Western figurative representation.

Highlights

Antún Kojtom presents his Nagual Birds, a new series of paintings on the concept of the Bird-ch’ulel: the cosmic vibe that takes forms of great significance in Mayan cosmology. A bird-human, the mystical-natural birds, messengers in the world of our everyday life.
