“The Maya culture healed through prayers. They healed through secrets. They didn’t know about medicines or herbs. Now, the traditional healer (Tzeltal) cleanses, but they also worship their own god; that’s why I painted the temple. The Tzeltales know about herbs (look at the man carrying the incense burner). Nowadays, the Lacandon Maya person goes to a doctor when they get sick. They heal with medicines, antibiotics.” – Kayúm Ma’ax
