Maya Juracán Co-director of Espacio MUY

“It is an honor to join a team that, for 11 years, has worked with commitment in the representation, memory, and resistance of Indigenous peoples through art. From this responsibility, we will strive to continue opening new paths, weaving struggles and dignities, and strengthening the collective visions that allow us to imagine fairer horizons through art.”

Emilia Sotelo Cultural Management of Espacio MUY

Emilia Sotelo (Chaco, Argentina, 1994) is an anthropologist and researcher in training at the Center for Research and Higher Studies in Social Anthropology (CIESAS), Southeast campus. Her work focuses on the intersections between art, politics, and interculturality, with an emphasis on contemporary Indigenous art. Throughout her career, she has worked as a cultural manager at the Directorate of Intangible Cultural Heritage in the Province of Chaco and at the National University of Córdoba, Argentina. This interdisciplinary perspective has enriched her professional practice beyond research and teaching. She is currently part of Espacio MUY, supporting archival and curatorial processes. Her approach seeks to weave transdisciplinary and collaborative dialogues that strengthen critical reflection on art, its circulation, and its valuation.

What is MUY?

A cultural space dedicated to contemporary Mayan and Zoque art

Galería MUY is located in the historic center of San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, Mexico.

We are dedicated to showing art of creators from the original peoples of Chiapas.

Galería MUY is a space for multimedia, plastic and performance art, created by established and emerging artists, who explore the Mayan and Zoque visual languages.

Espacio MUY is a “gallery-plus.” It’s a cultural center in which Maya and Zoque artists congregate and, as a collective, investigate and create new clarity about their common Project. The MUY supports artists to work in their communities, show artwork there, carry out workshops that open hearts and minds to painting, sculpture, photography and other contemporary media, regarding the past and speculating about the future.

MUY’s Project focuses on the big topics of the Maya and Zoque today: spiritual ecology, the defense of territory, gender and sexual identity reset, First Peoples’ pride, and – crucial for Indigenous communities and the world at large — our special project on migration and Maya/Zoque transterritorial evolving identities.

There is more on our agenda for the second decade of the MUY, including traveling exhibits, the collection properly preserved and shared, and sending/receiving artists in residencies.

Can you join us in this Maya- and Zoque-defined initiative?
