San Cristóbal de Las Casas. Chiapas, México
Welcome to the Galería MUY.
This is a public space; you are at home here. It is a space we open and share with artists and creators of all kinds, where form, color, and message are sung, shouted, felt, and seen. It is an initiative rooted in today’s local-universal Chiapas, created by Indigenous peoples and other authentic-origin groups and individuals.
Why “MUY”? Chamuy tal, chimuyotik ech’el.
It means “to rise” in the local Maya language. Even though we feel ourselves deeply brown, grateful for the green we have passed through, this gallery carries an undeniably blue vision.
The vision of this project is to create and speak new-old Chiapanecan-universal languages. (If this doesn’t make sense, it’s because it lacks poetry. Oh well.)
Please come see the exhibitions. We are committed to inviting local and outside artists who are exploring the minimal-necessary transformations needed to set off grenades of joy, reflection, and commitment. We will invite painters, installation artists, photographers, sculptors—especially those experimenting with multimedia expressions.
The works are for sale (although this is not a requirement). We reinvent this (not always pleasant) practice to support the livelihood of both the artists and the gallery. Because we believe it’s a beautiful dream that everyone could live with someone else’s art in their home. Barters and discounts are welcome, because we all have the right to live with art.
Come to the art gatherings, where creators share their work, their ideas, and discuss aesthetic, aesthetic-political, cultural, and social issues of today and tomorrow. When workshops are happening, these ideas are also created through form and color, printed or through movement. It’s all allowed.
The gallery will probably be very real, humorous, and daring.
