CHUVAJ VOB
Exhibition with Sounds at the Galería MUY
We are very pleased to present this Sound Art exhibition featuring local and national artists from across Mexico. Visual artists using sound as a new tool present pieces derived from their cultural richness, alongside artists curated by Carlos Olvera who present a small selection of contemporary works that use sound as the main element in their production.
“Chuvaj vob” or “crazy music” in Tsotsil is an artistic and curatorial experiment in which a dialogue is generated through digital sound files. Different pieces from various artists across Mexico converge in a single space, creating an auditory chaos that reflects what some consider magic and others see as tragedy within the same country.
This exhibition consists of two distinct processes: the first involves digital sound files of Mexican sound projects that were recorded previously. Some are recordings of live performances, others are rehearsals, and others are studio recordings produced in Tijuana, Monterrey, Guadalajara, and Mexico City. These are a selection of current projects that work with sound in spaces where noise and experimental music are everyday definitions when presenting an act. These digital files dialogue at La Muy with Chiapaneco artists from the towns of Tila, Chamula, Larrainzar, Bochojbo, and Rayón, who are making their first foray into audio as an extension of the art they have been producing in recent projects. This second process reveals a Chiapaneco sound entity, taking local audio and transforming it into experimental acoustics. The manipulation of soundscapes, field recordings, narrative, and the blending of traditional music with improvisation are processes that have been documented in Chuvaj vob as an initial showcase of the sonic richness of Chiapas through the ears of its artists, thus creating a sound wave frequency that does not measure distances across the national territory.
The exhibition features the participation of: Xun Betan (Venustiano Carranza, Ch), Maruch Méndez (Chamula, Ch), Humberto Gomez (Larrainzar, Ch), Manuel Nuj (Bochojvo), Saúl Kak (Rayón, Ch), Genaro Sántiz (Chamula, Ch), Fabricio de la Mora (Gdlj), Error Humano (Efrén Reyna González + Marco Antonio López Jaime.
